STATEMENT:

Luis Guzman's work evokes a universe in which time seems suspended. His compositions are familiar and enigmatic at the same time. The human presence, always discreet, activates our curiosity and we can follow its trail even when it does not appear on the scene. His paintings are delicious mysteries and delicate silences that take from the classical art of the 15th century, but also from painters like Rousseau, Magritte, and Delvaux. In Guzman’s work, the scale or perspective is frequently altered but the stillness of his scenes maintains the solemnity. His works are balanced between the playful and the symbolic, the mystical and the aesthetic, the banal and the sacred. Like the facets of a prism, these perspectives seek to condense different sources of light and unite them into a single beam.

Luis Guzman studied Fine Arts at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia in Bogota, his hometown. He continued his education in Spain at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, and in Belgium, at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Visuels de La Cambre, in Brussels.

He began his artistic career at the end of the ‘90s. Since moving a decade later to Europe, he has shown his work in group and solo exhibitions in Spain, Cyprus, Austria, France, Belgium, Luxemburg, the Netherlands, and the United States.

He has lived and worked in Brussels since 2012.
